WEST YELL - on line - Centennial Edition
Out here in the valley of twists we're beginning to plan our "Stage Coach Centennial Celebration." Beautiful West Yellowsnow will mark it's one hundredth year of stage coach travel next year and we're proud of that.We figure it will take a year to get everything in place. The school curriculum, the business owners, the churches, the city government, the county and the state. We plan to hold events throughout the year to commemorate significant events in our 100 year transportation history.
In addition to the traditional centennial "Time Capsule," we are going to have events commerating the important 'firsts' in our city's history. The theme for the year long celebration is still under discussion but has been narrowed down to two possibilities:
1. A Century Of Firsts
2. A century Of Accomplishment
What ever ends up being the final
choice, we're well
on our way to developing the list of commerorations. Here's the
preliminary list:| First Stagecoach First Gas Station First Saloon First Restaurant First Police Department First Hotel First Motor Court First Train In Town Last Train In Town First Fishing Guide First Grocery Store First Radio Station Last Stagecoach |

We are planning some street-naming ceremonies to rename streets in honor of our founding families and events. Please get in touch with the street comittee for suggestions. So far we have the following suggestions: Periguine Lane, Murphy Circle, Ellen's Lane, Terminal Drive. The city has agreed to rename the state highways in town to get rid of the confusing double names of these two streets. Visitors are often confused by the ambiguity and poor signage. One will be nemed "CENTENIAL HIGHWAY." The other will be called "VALLY ROAD."
Our local newspaper is placing the centennial logo on the masthead for every issue next year. These issues are certain to become collectors items. Each issue will feature the celebrations and commerations on the front page and carry features inside.
The radio station is planning a series of interviews with pioneer families and personalities who have contributed to our first century.
The business community has planned it's own summer celebrations without coordination or thought about our first century of accomplishment and they will persue their business interests with the Chamber Of Commerce.
The churches are incorporating local church history in their morning worship services and church school classes.
The school is well along in their planning for the curriculuum for next year. History classes, social studies classes, science classes, and even sports have joined to explore the first century of West Yellowsnow. The students are showing a remarkable enthusiasm for the project and are involved with exploring their family history in town.
The "Screamin' Yellow Rodeo" has agreed to help sponsor the commorative belt buckles that will be awarded for this years events. Replicas will be available purchase at Cheat & Swindler's Emporium - final pricing is yet to be determined.
Some business owners are conducting their own centennial celebrations with in-store specials and decorations. A few of them have joined together to help with the planning and implementation of the combined town picnic and Fourth Of July Celebration. A few business owners are planning some in-store ceremonies to acknowledge service to their businesses and the community of their employees.
As plans progress, you'll hear about them on these pages or in the West Yell Forum.
